How to charge a car battery with the battery in the vehicle

I try to start the car to show the battery is dead – there’s not even enough charge in the battery to get the ‘clicking’ noise associated with a drained battery. I remove the cables from the battery, connect the charger, monitor the status of charging, re-install the cables and start the car.
